  • Product Introduction
Description

Trim head screws are similar to flat head screws in both appearance and design. They have a circular head that is intended to finish flush with the surface of the material being fastened. The heads are often formed with nibs to ensure a nicer countersunk finish when the hole was not predrilled.

The difference between trim head screws and flat heads lies in the size of the head. Trim heads are made more like finishing nails and work very well in that capacity. When you are screwing in a place where the screw head is best hidden, trim head screws with a color-matched finish will virtually disappear.

Our Trim Head Finish Screws are manufactured in nominal diameters ranging from 1/8" to 3" (M3 – M80). We offer fasteners in both USCS/Imperial and metric sizes. Our fasteners meet applicable ASTM, ANSI, ASME, SAE, API, NAS, AN, MS, NACE, ISO, DIN, and KS standards.

Advantages of Trim Head Screws

  • The angled head allows for greater penetration into your material, resulting in a more flush finish than with flat head screws. Choose trim head screws when you want a clean, discreet finish with no protruding head to show or snag.
  • The four-point drive head allows for extreme torque when screwing into hard materials. The Phillips head drive has four faces that provide maximum grip when tightening. We carry Phillips #1 and #2 heads for flexibility in all your projects.
  • The zinc coating of our steel trim head screws makes them resistant to corrosion when installed. All our fasteners and screws are designed for long-term wear, unlike low-cost screws that can rust and break.
  • In contrast to nails, screws offer the benefit of significantly more holding force, both initially and over time. With various sizes available, you can find suitable trim head screws for your application that offer stronger performance than nails.

FAQs

Q: What is the purpose of a trim head screw?

A: Trim heads are great for running trim. In softwoods, they'll power right through the trim, drywall, and into the stud. Hardwoods usually require pre-drilling to prevent splitting and to ease the amount of torque required to set the screw.

Q: How long should trim screws be?

A: The length of a screw for a particular job can be determined by this rule of thumb: Two-thirds of the screw's length should protrude into the surface being fastened to. Drive types useful for trim work are Phillips and square drive.

Q: Do trim head screws hold well?

A: I use them almost daily. They will hold or pull a joint together far better than a nail. Just be sure not to oversize your pre-drilled hole or you lose the little advantage there is in the size of the screw head.

Q: What are trim head screws used for in woodworking?

A: Trim Head: With a smaller diameter, trim head screws are less visible and often used for carpentry and woodworking applications where appearance is important. Truss Head: Truss head screws have a wide, flat head with a low profile and large diameter, giving them a large bearing surface.

Q: What is the difference between trim head and flat head screws?

A: The big difference between the two lies in the size of the head. While the driver recess on a trim screw is about the same size as that of a flat head, the surface of the head around the recess is smaller.

Q: What size trim head screws for cabinets?

A: To attach the cabinets to each other, use No. 8 2¼-inch-long trim-head screws with fine threads suited for hardwood.

Q: Can I use trim screws for baseboards?

A: Bill Shaw's Trim Adjuster screws are excellent for installing baseboards, and wainscoting frames, too. A lot easier than getting behind something with shims or screws. You can actually shoot the base or wainscoting frames to the wall and then straighten up the corner later!

Q: What to do if a screw is damaged?

A: Choose a rubber band that is wide, flat, and flexible. Ideally, the rubber band should be slightly larger than the screw head. Place the rubber band on top of the stripped screw head, making sure it covers the entire surface. Press down firmly on the rubber band with your screwdriver.

Q: How to grip a screw with no head?

A: Use a pair of pliers to grip the exposed part of the screw firmly. Make sure you have a good grip before attempting to turn or extract the screw. Then, use a drill with a small bit to create a guide hole in the center of the screw.
